VictorianOur workshop supports children to explore artefacts, accounts, images through hands-on learning and role-play, and encourages children to develop a deeper understanding of what life was like for people living in the Victorian era. Ideal for Key Stage 1, (but can be differentiated for Key Stage 2), our workshop supports children to consider why Florence Nightingale is remembered as a significant individual through a day of hands-on, immersive and fun learning in your school! We encourage children to compare life then and now - what has changed and what has stayed the same? We also believe in the importance of children being able to handle artefacts from the time, so we bring a variety of Victorian artefacts with us for children to explore and to support their developing source enquiry skills. Part of our day includes children becoming characters from the time as we re-enact Scutari Hospital, including doctors, soldiers and nurses, so we provide opportunities to dress up and to use lots of hands-on resources to enable them to really feel in their Victorian role as they work together to make a difference. Through role-play and story-telling, we explore how she improved hospital conditions and the positive impact she had on the nursing profession, both at the time as well as the legacy she has left today. During our Florence Nightingale workshop, “Florence” will visit your school and share her experiences as she strove to become a nurse and to improve conditions for the soldiers in the Crimea.
